Basset Hounds are predisposed to glaucoma. Like other breeds with a deep chest, Bassets are prone to gastric dilatation with torsion in the stomach. It is considered an emergency and action must be taken immediately. Young Bassets are subjects to Paneosteitis (wandering or transient lameness), false diagnosis may lead to unnecessary surgery. A puppy outgrows this mysterious disease by the age of two. Sometimes Bassets have allergy to grasses, which are easily treated with eye ointments. If Bassets' long ears are not cleaned regularly, they develop otitis externa (smelly yucky ears). Large Bassets' paws are prone to abscesses and fungi infections.

Basset Hounds should never be given too much exercise because of the heavily boned front. In old age, Bassets may become fat and lazy. The majority of stud dogs are active up to 14 or even 17 years, but AKC will not register puppies sired by Basset Hounds over 12 years.
