Basset Hounds - Dogs - Feeding

Avoid feeding Basset Hounds fat food. Well-balanced, name brand dry food supplements with a canned food are ideal. Pregnant females require more food and vitamins. Puppies should eat 3-4 meals a day in proportion to their size. It is better to feed an adult Basset Hound 2-3 meals a day rather than one large meal, as Bassets are prone to bloat. All Bassets tend to get fat partly because their sad look makes the owners give them more than dogs require.
Life Span: 10-12 years.

Basset Hounds do well in apartments as long as given opportunities for daily exercises. They are very active and can run about for hours. As for grooming, Bassets need little care - just occasional brushing and bathing, because the hard short coat repels dirt and water rather well. Regular brushing prevents shedding. Bassets need bath only 4-6 times a year, because a rubdown with a coarse cloth or a glove removes dirt and brings a shine to the coat.

Basset's long ears should be cleaned every week as they often drape in food and water dishes and pick up dirt from the ground. Trim the Basset's nails every 1-3 weeks to allow the dog to walk correctly and properly support its heavy weight. If the nails click to the floor they need to be cut. Also clean the Bassets Hounds' teeth with a soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste.
